Two arrested for extortionBaddi, June 4

Baddi, June 4
The Baddi police has arrested an assistant manager of a battery-manufacturing unit for extortion after he was caught red-handed accepting Rs 70,000 from the manager of a packaging unit in Nalagarh today.
Vijender Chandel, an assistant manager in Sukam Power Systems Limited at Baddi, in connivance with Shaukeen Singh, who hails from the Jaswa area of Kangra district and deals in scrap in the Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh (BBN) area, had sent a letter to the said unit under the letterhead of an NGO, Manavadhikaar Emergency Helpline Association, on April 16 that the unit was violating various labour laws and action would be taken against it if the laws were not abided by.
Baddi SP Gurdev Chand Sharma said the letter had directed the unit to remove these discrepancies or face action. A case under Section 384 of the IPC has been registered against the two and they have been arrested.
The SP said initial investigations revealed that the labour officer visited the unit after the receipt of the first letter and he enquired about this complaint. Another letter was sent on May 25 as a reminder. Meanwhile, Chandel started calling the unit management to extend the illegal gratification of Rs 3 lakh so that the NGO did not proceeded further in the matter.
It was, however, decided that the unit management would pay Rs 2 lakh per annum to the NGO and it would be payable in three instalments while the first instalment of Rs 70,000 was to be paid today in order to diffuse the issue.
Harassed by the NGO, the unit management approached the police and a trap was laid where they caught Chandel and Shaukeen accepting the said amount.

Dhumal admitted to AIIMS

New Delhi, June 4
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal was today admitted to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here for treatment of a urinary tract infection (UTI).
Down with what was earlier suspected to be a stomach infection, Dhumal, who was admitted to the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, was earlier in the afternoon moved to Delhi after he complained of extreme restlessness.
The medical team attending on the Himachal CM finally tracked down the illness to a UTI, which led to severe chest congestion leading further to breathlessness. He is now on medication and responding well.
Speaking to The Tribune, Arun Thakur, the CM’s son, said the latter was fine and recuperating though it would take four days or so for the infection to be treated. The CM would remain in AIIMS till the ailment was fully cured. Due to the problem, he had not been able to attend the ongoing BJP’s National Executive meeting in Lucknow. His other son and BJP youth wing president Anurag Thakur was, however, attending the political meeting.

Ramdev’s fast draws support in state

Mandi, June 4
Baba Ramdev’s anti-corruption satyagraha launched from the Ramlila Ground in New Delhi today received a good response here mainly from the Sangh Parivar, Arya Samaj and NGOs as they joined strike at the Chandni Manch. However, the Congress and its frontal organisations, the CPI and the CPM, kept off from it.
It also received a good response from the RSS, VHP, BJP and other saffron organisations and NGOs, who have earlier supported the similar Anna Hazare’s indefinite fast in support of the Lokpal Bill against corruption.
BJP leaders from Mandi Sadar like Kanhiya Lal and Dr Raju and others joined the strike against corruption.
Left-supported anganwari workers staged a rally in support of their demands and submitted a memorandum to the DC.
20 sit on indefinite fast
DHARAMSALA: The Kangra unit of the Bharat Swabhimaan Trust in support of their leader Baba Ramdev and his fight against corruption sat on an indefinite fast on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner office here today.
“Twenty members (yoga gurus) of the organisation began their fast and at least 40 members will be participating at the chain fast. At least 1,200 members were present in the support of Ramdev’s fight against corruption,” said Jagdev Thakur, district coordinator and district president of Bharat Swabhimaan.
Thakur and other members echoed that the stir was not against any party or any political person but Baba has started satyagraha against the corrupt and seeks to bring back the black money.
The organisation recommended the government to stop printing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes to curb corruption. “The stir will continue till the government fulfils our demands in writing,” said the district coordinator.
In Dharamsala around 1,500 (till 5 pm) persons supported the agitation on day one by participating in the signature campaign.
